I’ve been gardening in Michigan for as long as I can remember. I’ve gardened in everything from windowboxes to borrowed plots, to my own garden on the outskirts of Detroit and now on nearly 10 acres of hilly land in beautiful Northwest Michigan. While I grow plenty of flowers, my favorite part of gardening is growing food for my family. Vegetable, herb, and fruit growing are a bit of an obsession for me, along with growing them in a healthy, sustainable manner.
I’m a freelance writer, specializing in gardening and green living. I got started blogging as the founder of In the Garden Online, which was the precursor to Gardening in the Mitten. I am the author of “Edible Gardening for the Midwest” and “Vegetable Gardening for the Midwest,” and I wrote about gardening for About.com and TreeHugger. I’ve also written for national magazines, including Birds & Blooms, Fine Gardening, and Mother Earth News.
Gardening in Michigan is a joy and a challenge — my hope is to make this blog a community for gardeners from all over this beautiful state and the rest of the Great Lakes region.
